During the 1600s a few nutmeg nuts could be sold for enough money in England to provide a lifetime of financial independence. Also known as the myristica fragrans, nutmeg is a versatile spice and can be used with other spices, such as cloves and cinnamon. It adds an intense, warm and sweet aroma to custards, puddings, banana bread, honey cake, pumpkin pie and lemon desserts. Nutmeg enhances the taste of vegetable stews, sauces and rice dishes, and is a common ingredient in spinach ravioli. The spice has shown to have many medicinal properties due to the complex structural molecules present in it. Myristica fragrans is a natural anti-microbial agent in oral care products and is known for its anti-inflammatory effect, as well as digestive stimulant and analgesic properties. Myristicin in nutmeg inhibits production of a key enzyme implicated in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Please be aware that in very large doses, raw nutmeg has a psychotropic, hallucinatory, or narcotic effect. Keep this potent spice nice and use it in small quantities!
